Living

OUR SUMMER HOME

In Venice, students share twin rooms in a family-run hotel in the Dorsoduro district of the city, minutes away from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Contemporary Art Collection of Francois Pinault at the Punta della Dogana. Housing is within easy walking distance of dining and classrooms. Summerfuel will use student responses to housing questionnaires to pair roommates. Senior staff will also live in residence and are available to help with any issues 24/7.

Neighborhood Highlights

Venice is the perfect city to study abroad in. Like a college campus, there are no cars, buses, or trucks. Students walk nearly everywhere or use the water-bus system. The city is safe and contained, and the areas visited are largely free from tourist masses. The Dorsoduro district is filled with eateries, shops, and boutiques. Wander past ancient palaces, enchanting squares, and through narrow alleys opening to wide lagoon views - Venice is an enchanting place to spend your summer.

Dining

Throughout the Dorsoduro district and all of Venice, there is no shortage of mouth-watering cuisine to indulge in. Cafes, pubs, bistros, pizzerias, and ristorantes line the streets giving students a plethora of options to choose from. Breakfast and dinner are included in the program fee, and students will be responsible for their own lunches while on program. Please advise Summerfuel of dietary needs during the application process.
Learning

Learning in Venice

Learning in Venice is designed to be inspiring and hands-on. Lectures take place in air-conditioned rooms and include a wide array of topics, as well as a comprehensive introduction to Venetian art given by art historian, Charlie Hall. Students venture outside of the lecture hall with field trips, guided tours, and discussions with experts in the field from art curators, art historians, and art critics, to writers, journalists, and more.

Art Visits

Learning extends beyond the classroom in our summer art program, with visits throughout the city to private art collections, galleries, churches, and more to see paintings by Giovanni Bellini, Titian, Carpaccio. Tintoretto, Veronese, and Tiepolo amongst others.

Our team of international experts will guide tours through the Accademia Gallery, home to Venetian painting, Francois Pinault’s two major collections of contemporary art at the Palazzo Grassi, the Punta della Dogana, and the Prada Foundation. Students will enjoy private visits to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection of 20th century art, and to The Basilica of Saint Mark to see incredible mosaics and golden treasures, free from the bustle of other visitors.

The Venice Biennale

Our study abroad Italy students will have the privilege to experience the Venice Biennale firsthand. The Venice Biennale is the world’s leading exposition of Contemporary Art, and every country that produces art is represented here. Whether in a national pavilion in the Giardini, the Arsenale, or in one of the many off-site pavilions scattered around Venice in palaces or churches, the Biennale is a spectacular sight to see. Students will be taken around the exhibitions by our team of critics, curators, dealers and an active contemporary artist.

Students will learn from an impressive and passionate faculty that represent the top experts in the art world. Safety

EXPERIENCE MATTERS

The safety and well-being of our students is of paramount importance to us. Each program has two distinct specialist teams - one to manage residence life and one to manage academic success. Each staff member is carefully vetted using a written application, personal interview, professional reference check, and required background check.

RESIDENTIAL & SENIOR STAFF

At Summerfuel we are particularly proud of our extraordinary program directors, staff, and faculty. We believe that strong, nurturing and experienced leadership sets the tone for a successful program. The senior staff consists of a Program Director and an Assistant Director. The Program Director, Charlie Hall, has been working with Summerfuel since 2005.

Residential Advisors (RAs) are an essential part of the Summerfuel experience and are hired to support and act as role models to our students. RAs are college upperclassmen or recent graduates with experience in residential life. They live in residence, with one RA for every ten students. RAs will always be available to organize activities, provide tours around Venice, answer questions, and make sure our students get the most out of their summer.

SAFETY & SUPERVISION

We implement the following measures to ensure our students are well-cared for and safe at all times:
  • No more than 1 to 10 residential staff to student ratio
  • Designated zone in which students can travel
  • Buddy system to ensure students never travel alone
  • 11pm daily curfew
  • Zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use
