Costa Rica is a land of stunning natural beauty that is home to cascading waterfalls, mist-covered volcanoes and deserted beaches. It’s easy to see why this Central American nation is the birthplace of pura vida – the pure life. But away from the tourist hotspots, life isn’t easy for everyone. You will join the non-profit organization SEPROJOVEN as they deliver social services to children living in indigenous communities.

Through our partner The Third Half, our ground-breaking service program shows students
how soccer is not just the world’s favorite sport, but also a powerful vehicle for positive social change. And you don’t have to be a soccer player to do it. We use soccer as an immersive tool, and you’ll experience first-hand how soccer is helping bring hope and opportunity to young people from the indigenous community.

Take this opportunity to have a life-changing experience and leave a legacy of lasting impact.

To be effective Global Citizens, young people need to be flexible, creative and proactive. They need to be able to solve problems, make decisions, think critically, communicate ideas effectively and work well within teams and groups. These skills and attributes are increasingly recognized as being essential to succeed in other areas of 21st century life too, including many workplaces” – Oxfam

The Journey

The program takes you out of your comfort zone for a journey of personal transformation that helps you to understand how the world works, the challenges it faces and how we can solve them together as Global Citizens.

Experience

We create a level playing field so you experience what life is like through the eyes of your host. You’ll visit exciting tourist attractions with trusted local guides, experience exotic cuisine and customs and make new friends from all over the world.

Impact

Profits from every program are invested directly so you’ll experience first-hand how you are helping to change lives.

Why Soccer?

Soccer is often called ‘the world’s only common language’. There are more than 3.5 billion soccer players and fans around the world. That makes soccer a dynamic and interactive way to see the world and to understand different cultures and societies.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to improve the lives of boys and girls in underserved communities around the world. We don’t believe in ‘voluntourism’. We know that what every organization needs most is resources and that’s why we invest profits from every trip directly into the host organization so they can employ more local people and reach more underserved youth. You’ll get hands-on experience working alongside local coaches, allowing you to really understand the impact of your trip.

You’ll experience and help defend the ancient culture of the indigenous population through language, culture and music. You’ll visit local families and help to run a school soccer program – all whilst learning how soccer is protecting the rights of indigenous people and promoting equal rights for girls and women.

Your journey starts in San Jose, lively capital of Costa Rica and the largest city in the country, home to bustling markets, museums, and colonial-era mansions, before you visit Salitre to learn the culture and customs of the local indigenous people, the BriBri Ka Kanebelo. After living, learning and playing with the local people you’ll visit the stunning La Casona lodge to experience Costa Rica’s natural splendor and learn about sustainable tourism.

YOUR SOCIAL IMPACT

The program in Costa Rica is hosted by the respected non-profit organization SEPROJOVEN, which uses soccer to help strengthen cultural values and social skills, promote leadership and encourage intercultural exchanges.

You’ll help SEPROJOVEN coaches bring soccer and life skills programs to local indigenous communities, join them in language, dance and singing classes and help local families with harvesting, craft-making and sugar-cane grinding. Thanks to your visit, SEPROJOVEN will be able to achieve goals like:
  • Provide soccer equipment for the local Liga Fem soccer league for girls and the Copa Indigena for local indigenous children
  • Organize a youth leadership training camp for local young people to become the next generation of leaders in their community
  • Organize artistic workshops for local indigenous youth

EXPERIENCE MATTERS

Our summer staff members are at the heart of all that we do. Supported by our New York headquarters, our program directors and resident advisors create an exciting and balanced residential, academic and extracurricular experience each summer.

SENIOR STAFF

At Summerfuel, we are particularly proud of our superlative program directors. We believe that strong, nurturing and experienced leadership sets the tone for a successful program. The program is run by a senior staff consisting of a Site Director and Assistant Director, who oversee all aspects of our students’ daily life.

LOCAL STAFF

In addition to the senior staff team, the Costa Rica program location has site coordinators through our on-site partner, The Third Half, who work in close contact with experienced local representatives and native recreational staff. This team is the key to accessing local culture and ensuring that students get the most from their stay in Costa Rica. Our official non-profit partner, SEPROJOVEN, are on hand to lead workshops and provide the curriculum content to our students. Staff often return year after year, and go through a rigorous selection process and pre-program orientation.

SAFETY & SUPERVISION

The leadership team and program structure emphasizes cultural immersion through personal attention, high quality academics, and exciting cultural and recreational programs so that students learn experientially. There are at least four staff members in Costa Rica. Directors, local representatives and recreational staff meet with Summerfuel students daily to ensure they get the most from their experience. Students learn, make friends and have fun through the support and guidance of the dedicated and caring staff. The safety and security of our students is an absolute priority.
